Content-Type: text/plain This post was inspired when I was listening to an amazing version of "Change Your Mind" yesterday. Anyone who has never heard the song Change Your Mind I recommend you immmediately make a trade with someone who has a version of the song(I would make copies but I'm in the middle of too many trades right now). This song lyrically and musically is just an amazing song that should be on an album or atleast should be in the regular rotation. Its got a definite blues feel(though its also has an uptempo, happy "classic GSW" feel). What I especially like about the song is Aaron during the jam doing his vocal "Dah-dah-dah do do" coinciding with the music which leads right into the final lyrical section. The version I was listening to, from the fore-n-aft circa 1992, was that Aaron just really went off which led to the rest of the band jamming hard. AWESOME SONG!!!!!!! Basically, just another example that a lot of the best stuff GSW ever wrote they never play. Aaron switched between a Gibson and possibly his custom, and I forget what amp setup. Anyone know? How about effects...pedals, processors? Just as pathetic as basing it on whether the lead singer is hot. (Interesting note: How many chords are their in blues songs. How many original riffs?) Listening to jam bands all the time will rot your brain (as will constant metal, hardcore, jaz, country, rap or any other style). Vary the styles you embrace, and you may find you've been missing a lot by closing your mind. NOW, THE PROPOSAL: I want to trade for a) Your band's demo or live tape b) Your favorite band (show) c) A mix tape of local bands around you (smalltime, not hometown hero type) d) Your favorite tape In return, I will trade either the same thing, a regular tape from my list, or half and half (i.e, a 45m BF5 and a 45m mix, or a 90m GSW and a 90m Mudhens). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <***I WILL ALSO PAY FOR POSTAGE BOTH WAYS***> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I want people to hear these bands, both for the bands and the people. That's it. I hear these guys (oops, I meant boys) sell out everywhere. They're a hot ticket. But that's pop music for you. It's always been this way, and it always wil, aside from the occasional crossover bands (DMB for example). I, for one, think that although DMB has 'sold out' they still kick ass. They haven't changed their songwriting or anything, it's just that more people began liking them 2 years ago and those folks that were fans from 5 years ago feel cheated because they feel that DMB is no longer 'their' band. That's the price you pay (or the band pays) for success. It is possible that someday GSW could be a mainstream hit-machine that every teeny-bopper in America swears by, it really could happen. Then what would become of our micro-community here? I wonder. Would we all just abandon our devotion to GSW because they achieved stardom or would we continue to bitch about which 'classic should have been played'? Perhaps, even, we'll all just complain that too many people have hopped on the GSW bandwagon (you know - when their video is a top 100 in the MTV rotation). As much as I wish success upon the band, it would totally suck if you saw this ad in The Voice: 3 Nights Only - God Street Wine - LIVE AT GIANT STADIUM It sure is sad day when GSW will proclaim "we have achieved the ultimate level of success - we sold more albums than Hanson!!!!" Does anyone know if the video was seen outside the GSW community? The video was pretty cool, although the song was severly butchered to make it "mainstream friendly" (most of the intro and closing instrumental were cut so that the video would not exceed 3.5 minutes). Everytime I go to quote a song, I end up with an album written. I must say, the combined effect of the lyrics in Into the Sea is just incredible, espescially the change in rhythm and style from the beginning to the end. Ballroom and Any Major Dude are other favorites. I'd quote them, but I know I won't be able to hold back, so I'll have to assume you all, like me, know them by heart. It always seemed to me that they GSW are more well-rounded than a lot of jam bands when it comes to the words. Well I was taping this show for someone today and was listening also, and thinking "man what a kick ass show, if the first set is this good the second set must rock". So the first set ends and I go to tape the second, but the case is empty! I search everywhere for it and can't find. The only thing that I could think that could have happened to it was that since it was unlabeled, in my haste to make a trade, I probably thought it was a blank and taped over it. :( too bad for me. Subject: GSW Lyrics and auto reverse Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" My favorite GSW lyrics are not the most poetic lyrics but the lyrics that remind me of everyday life. The poetic lines are good too don't get me wrong, but the everyday lines just seem to strike a chord in me. Epilouge: "All the fucked up crazy things I've said" I guess because I say alot of stupid things that when I think about them a month or so later I wish I had never said them. Who's Driving: The whole opening verse, with all the questions (I'll write them out if anyone wants me too) Those are some of the things I find my self wondering about all the time. Well just some of the time I guess. Wendy(no flames please): the chorus "Do you hear the music wendy? Do you hear the tune?" Well they probably don't really mean that much, but I always think about it because I know this girl named wendy, and she's kinda dumb and sometimes I wonder if she ever hears the music. Well now you all think I'm queer because the dumbest lyrics are the my favorites. Oh yea about auto-reverse the reasoning I've heard to why it is bad to record with is that to change directions, the tape heads must switch positions. SO the y are no longer in there ideal position so the sound might not be as good. Could be BS or could be logic, I don't know. Although I always used to like the Dave matthews band, the last show I saw (two summers ago at Jones Beach) was the worst show I have seen by anyone in a long time! The people around me were almost quoting exactly those sarcastic lines up top, I almost got beat up by some kid a little younger than me (but much stronger than me) who got really pissed off when I wouldn't sell him buds!! My brother almost got in a fight too, with some people sitting near him snorting coke and starting to get way to close to his girlfriend. And worst of all, the music was so low that I couldn't hear it because the complaining about the jams was too loud. This is not a scene or a band I would ever go back to. peace matto Mowen5@concentric.net http://www.concentric.net/~mowen5/gsw.html -under construction! ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 12:40:49 -0500 Reply-To: Ross D Minott Sender: God Street Wine List From: Ross D Minott Subject: recent phish shows to trade. The lyrics are: "The devil can't tell the story This time I'll read the book" and then the end: "Mind that kindly doctor's advice A cup of wine makes everything nice One cup of wine makes everything nice" - Tom Osander and of course one of my favorite quotes is from an interview with Lo Faber discussing "Peanut Butter Jar": "I believe all the world's problems can be solved with Peanut Butter-- applied correctly." -Lo Faber Peace, Prosper, Tour Forever- Doug Free web-based email, Forever, From anywhere! http://www.mailexcite.com ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 01:16:56 -0600 Reply-To: Big Bird Productions Sender: God Street Wine List From: Big Bird Productions Subject: Gram Parsons?(Sort of GSW?) Pat brings up many popular misconceptions that need to be addressed. First off, dolby does not degrade the quality of the music, unless the playback machine is different from the original recording deck, which in most trading circumstances it is. if you are making for yourself a mix tape of some cd's, it would be foolish not to use the best dolby technology available to you -- including dolby s or dbx. Second, there are different types of auto reverse, but in almost all, there is a different motor driving the tape. Unless your deck has been recently calibrated, there will be a difference in the speed of the tape when the second side plays, unless you physically flip the tape allowing the same motor to drive both sides. Furthermore, your first deck and second deck (or wells on a dubber) are likely not in perfect calibration. By flipping at different times, you compound the problem. Since on one side they will probably be off by only a second or two, there will rarely be enough symptoms to show the problem. Really, I'm trying to pitch some basic recording concepts here, and I've used this post as a reason to get on a soap box. So, if you think I'm on a tangent, I'm sorry, but please read on anyway. 1. The quality recording you get from a dubbing deck is very very sub-standard. If you want to make good tapes, you must buy two separate decks. This does not have to cost a fortune. There are many reliable dealers of high-end used audio equipment, they just require a little more effort. 2. Having two decks is not enough. You must connect them with quality interface cable, and never connect through the receiver or pre-amp. 3. Tape decks are very sensitive pieces of equipment. They require love, care and attention. if you would like them to last and continue to make good tapes, you must have them maintained every year or so. this includes a professional clean, demag, and calibration. Unfortunately, this is about 75 dollars worth of maintenance. Best results if you staggar and only do one deck every six months. Some people have their own demag wands, but the demag is not necessary to do often, so it's best left to the pros. The clean is more than the basic head job that you should do with a wet type head cleaner (or q-tip) every 12-24 hours of play. Anyway, the real important part of the procedure is the calibration. You'd be amazed how much 2-3 seconds of drag on a 45 minute tape effects the tone quality. For more info on taping etiquitte and procedures, see the taping section of the phish faq at phish.net. there's also a link from my tape list at http://www-bprc.mps.ohio-state.edu/~ron/home.html. Just think, they don't have to open up their tape archive, they didn't have to release a special bonus disc with the last two releases, they don't have to hang with members of this list before one of their longest shows of the year. They are just doing these things to thank us, the fans. I'm really bummed I'm going to be down in Atlanta, and not up in Boston for the show. What other bands plan their own net gathering, with the fans AND the band in the theatre before the show...WOW I really hope GSW gets the break they need, and gain a bit more popularity. Anyone can get a show there, but big acts occassionally get booked. I must warn people, after seeing others' praise of this venue, that it is a dive. Intimate, yes. Sanitary, no. It's kinda in a bad neighborhood (no offence to any neighbors) It's still a great place for a decent band to play. Which means GSW will rock. I mean, they're no Hanson, but then again, who is? Others may call you and I hypoctrical for that, as Abu-Jamal is a convicted cop killer. The difference: all evidence points to Mumia's innocence. He is an intelligent black man who had the nerve to speak his mind as a journalist, which apparantly is a crime in Philadelphia, so he's held as a political prisoner, on a murder that he didn't do. That's a case worth bringing public attention to. Marv Albert is just another wanna-be jock with nothing of value to say to society, who got caught abusing a woman. Screw him. We didn't even have the regular stint about which Merlot best rounds out a spicy Chicken Pepperoni. (anyone else give this dish a try after seeing Chevy Chase serve it up?) Now comes October, the judgement month?, and everyone from John Popper, to hippies, to God Street Wine itself is getting hammered on. It's cool to let loose on various topics and express dislike for the new album, if that's what you happen to think, but keep the hammers for freedom (Mumia, Woody Allen, Marv Albert, ...) But, in doing so, lets remember from where we come. Not just the Dead music and revivals of spirit and community that our older brothers and sisters forged, but the long history of music as an intelectual and spiritual endeavor that includes the listener and is not just entertainment. FM music was conceived to entertain the masses between comercials, period. There are some stations better than others now, and even a good old pirate station last week in Ann Arbor (96.9!), but most are still comercial based. What we choose to listen to is challenging, not tedius. Good lyrics that tease may be cheesy on one level, but often have a wider meaning or even act as a foil to the complexity of the music. Anyway, point is that there is nothing neo or new about the hippie scene and that recent jam bands do follow that kind (and vice versa). Be as much or as little a part in it as you wish, but even trading tapes and listening to live music instead of the FM commercial scene is radical politics of the sort many musicians throughout history would be proud. Thanks to the band for forging ahead with a balance. I'll be there supporting you Saturday night in Detroit as will many hippie friends. Peace and let the music rock your gypsy soul, Kevin Leach ps. best live show for me this year was String Cheese Incident, 10-15-97 at the infamous Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. I don't remember the exact date. It was at the Wetlands Preserve in NYC. It was a totally amazing show. I had heard "BAG" once. A freind had suggested I give it a listen since I liked Blues Traveler so much. Anyway, I listened to the tape and I liked it a lot. So, I heard that God Street was playing the Wetlands and stared asking if any of my friends wanted to go see them. I was going to school at Rutgers aat the time in Newark, so it was just a PATH ride for a $1 to get into NYC. However, no one waanted to go. I almost just forgot the whole thing because noo one wanted to go see them and at this point I'd only ltened to the tape once. But something made me say to my self, "Fuck it. I'll go by myself." So off I went to NYC. It was totally worth it. the show was like $8 to get in and they played for like three hours. I was...well that's probably another story altogether. Anyway, seeing these guys live hooked me instantly, and I haven't stopped listening or touring since. It was probably one of the best shows I'd ever been to. I even met a girl, and if you know how the downstairs at the Wetlands is set up with the couches in the corner, things got pretty interesting. It was well worth going by myself. I sometimes wish I never moved away from that area. If anyone ever gets a chance to see GSW at the Wetlands, my opinion is that it is a definate must see. Thinking back on it brings such good memories back. Anyone happen to have any tapes from the Wetlands during the Fall of 1990? Well, that's my first show experience. I noticed this a while ago when I was listening to a show on tape, left the room for about 10 minutes or so, and when I came back the tape was in the middle of a great jam. Nice and long, powerful and building. I began to wonder what song it was, since I didn't quite recognize it. Well, I eventually heard the lyrics to Crazy Head kick back in. I was really surprised. That was the last song I expected them to jam out instead of leaving it as a 4 or 5 minute song like on the disc. So, yes, it would be cool if they brought those back. I'm assuming the audiences would react well to them. So, who knows. I mean, Morning Cigs and Mantaloking Town seemed like more of a long shot than Crazy Head or Stone House. And, to complicate it more, the bass player reads the list. I don't know if its legal or not, but, in defense of it, its to get the music out to those who cannot get a hold of it. When a band releasess four or five different versions of a single, getting them all can be hard. What do yall think about this? pieces, Stuart ps JACK TRIPPER ROCKS! I think you need to be careful when it comes to DMB since they made such a stink about bootlegs (bootlegs in the true sense of the word, in that shows were being sold with profit going to parties not associated with the artist). I don't think I would tape the CD for anyone. However, if I had taped that show myself, I think I could copy it. Otherwise, in an effort to encourage tape-friendly bands to continue their permission to tapers, I wouldn't want to rock the proverbial battleship, as they say. From a recording industry perspective (unrelated to previous topic), I wonder how the sales of live CD's compare to those of studio releases. I'd be interested to see that statistic. It may explain why some bands don't release as many live CD's as we would all like them to do. Since GSW is with a major label these days, I doubt that we'll EVER see a live one hit the market, assuming my theory is true that live CD's don't sell as well, in general. Polygram probably has enough trouble selling GSW to the mass market, as it is, so to subect it to further competition against a specialty product would hurt the sales of both - No way, GSW doesn't quite have that mass market appeal. (BNL did it successfully last year, as they penetrated the MTV circles) If we ever hope to get a live GSW, they need to go back to the Indies. ***Do you remember when GSW did those Coke commericals? I am back, and I have one more twist for the issue. But First, Chris, I was pretty sure you supported the idea of copying the commercial CD's, thus my tone - if I misread you, then I am sorry. How about CD's that were printed as a limited edition, and are no longer available? I have been copying "On Tour Forever" by Traveler since it sold out in stores (you can find it from collector shops, secondhand). I find no prolbem with that. I also have made copies of the bonus CD that came with Red, as the 1,000 copies of that are all gone. And, if this newest bonus live GSW CD becomes really hard to find (I think it already is) I will probably see no problem making tapes of that either. They were all free-bies that came with CDs. Maybe a condition I could use, is that the person getting the tape, has to have purchased a copy of the album the bonus disc came with. This is usually the case, as I trade with people who are fans of the band already. As to the issue that E. Budke raised, I think that, silly as it sounds, you can copy the tapes of the DMB show if the show was legaly taped according to their policy, but the CD's that may come from those same tapes are not to be taped, since they are copyrighted. Take the Dead as an example: the shows they are releasing as Dick's Picks are all in circulation on the taping scene, but I doubt they would approve of people copying DP's. (i have my own thoughts on this, but >am interested to hear yours on this matter) this could go for any official >'live' release.... > I can't even believe that you would support this Chris. An official live release from a band is an album, like a studio album, copyrighted by the band. The whole reason DMB released it was to COMBAT bootleg CD's. Remember bootleg=illegal. We do not trade bootlegs, we trade tapes legally procured by open taping policies by the bands involved. That is not bootlegging, by definition. This new release, if it were copied, would be considered a bootleg copy. That is illegal. IF the disc is in print and available to anyone through a record store, it's just not right to copy. Just because they allow free taping and trading, does not mean that they put out the CDs for you to copy and distribute - it's a commercial product. It is up to us as fans to support that, otherwise what incentive is there for legal taping? How many people bought Phish's "A Live One" - not many. It's a shame that too many people say "I've got tapes, what do I need to buy the album for?" - To support the band that already gave you so much for free, that's what. I finally ordered "Bag" so I would have all of GSW's releases, not so much because I care whether I have it, but because I have 50+hours of GSW on tape, and I should support them. It is simply not legal or right to copy a commercially released live CD by any band, whether they allow taping at shows or not. It's stealing, plain and simple. They're giving us a lot, don't take more. Pat brings up many popular misconceptions that need to be addressed.
